Composition
I’m personally inclined to regard sound art as a branch or evolution of modern composition. While composition developed from Baroque period to modern atonal music, the essence of its change is the continuous liberation and breakthrough of aesthetics. So is sound arts, since an aesthetic was born out to accept natural or electronic samples as an instrument, and even break the traditional law of equality for “composition”, sound arts was born.
Self Expression
In my opinion, every pieces of art must contain the self-expression of the creator to some extent, no matter whether the original intention of the creation is more documentary, more applied or more descriptive. Self-expression not only can be about ideas, about philosophy, about politics, but also can be on a personal emotional level. Self-expression is subtle, sometimes people will perceive that “oh, the artist seems like want to say something”, more often it is unconsciously passed on to the audience and infected the audience. As one of many art types, sound art also has the same characteristics.
Experience
Although I believe that the self-expression of artists always exists in sound art, it does not mean that the expression is the only purpose of creating the work, which often leads to too utilitarian results. For the audiences, the more important thing is the experience of appreciating the work, opening the senses and immersing in it, and whether the audiences have truly received the content that the artist tried to express will be less important at that time. Artists should not try to ask everyone to understand their works, after all, there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes, and everyone’s free interpretation of the work, even if it’s contrary to the creator’s intention, is the continuation of the work’s life to another view. As creators, we should calmly accept this fact, and to be able to bring a wonderful experience to the audience is almost the success of sound arts.
