Since our group’s collaborative sound composition is very close to the format of radio drama, I chose to read this book to help me do it better. ‘Radio drama: and how to write it’ is a practical handbook published by G. Lea in 1926 that explores the techniques and essentials of writing radio drama. This book systematically introduces the process and techniques of writing radio dramas. The author gives detailed explanations from character building, and plot construction to dialogue writing, providing practical guidance and advice for creators. Through case studies and examples of interpretation, readers can gain insight into the key points of writing radio drama and how to effectively use sound to create atmosphere and emotion. The book emphasizes the importance of sound in radio drama. The author points out that sound is the soul of radio drama, and through the use of sound, creators can create lifelike scenes and situations that trigger empathy and emotional resonance in listeners. Therefore, in the process of creating a radio drama, special attention needs to be paid to the selection and use of sound effects to ensure the quality and attractiveness of the work. Compared with stage plays and films, radio dramas have their unique forms of expression and charm. The author suggests that radio drama can create an artistic experience that transcends material space through the expressiveness and imagination of sound, allowing listeners to construct colorful images and emotions in their minds. Therefore, creators need to give full play to the characteristics and advantages of radio drama to bring listeners a unique listening experience. After reading this book, I have gained a clearer understanding of the techniques and essentials of writing radio dramas, and have gained some inspiration and thoughts from it. I believe this book is a valuable reference book for both radio drama creators and radio drama lovers.
