Future Aspirations

During my time studying Sound Arts, my understanding of sound and my future career has changed quite significantly. When I first started the course, I mainly saw sound as an experimental and open-ended creative medium, focusing on personal expression and abstract listening experiences. However, as the course progressed, through project work and some practical experience, my direction has gradually become more focused and shifted towards applied sound practice, especially in film and game audio.

One of the most influential experiences for me has been working on student film productions. While working as a location sound recordist and post-production sound editor, I began to understand how sound actually functions in a real production environment. It is not an isolated creative practice, but something highly collaborative, requiring close communication with directors, editors, cinematographers, and other departments. I started to realise how important sound is in storytelling—how dialogue clarity affects audience understanding, how ambience builds a sense of space, and how mixing shapes emotional tone. These practical tasks made me realise that sound design is not only creative, but also highly technical and detail-oriented.

Working with my peers has also had a strong influence on how I approach my practice. Collaborating with people from different backgrounds exposed me to a wide range of working methods and creative perspectives. Through discussion and feedback, I often discovered approaches to sound that I had not considered before. This has also made me more confident in how I communicate and present ideas, which I think is essential for working in professional environments. My interest in experimental music and sound art has not disappeared in film and media projects; instead, it has evolved into a more sensitive approach to texture, space, and atmosphere. This balance between artistic exploration and practical application has gradually become central to my practice.

Looking forward, I am increasingly interested in pursuing a career in the film or game audio industry, working within more professional production environments. For me, this is not a departure from artistic practice, but rather an extension of sound creation into a more real-world and collaborative context. I hope to continue working on commercial projects in the future while also maintaining my own experimental sound practice, allowing both to influence and develop alongside each other.
